Klapa (Dalmatian harmony-singing group) multipart singing of Dalmatia on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

12.01.2013.

The klapa singing was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Paris on 5 December 2012. Consequently, at present the Republic of Croatia numbers 12 cultural properties inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and 1 property on the List of Endangered Cultural Heritage, which is in need of urgent safeguarding. Considering the number of the inscribed intangible cultural properties, therefore, Croatia is ranked among the world's best. The Ministry of Culture issued a statement highlighting the fact that the inclusion of this cultural property on the Representative List has actually confirmed its value and importance, not only as the national but also as part of the world heritage. The inclusion is furthermore an exceptional acknowledgement to all those who have made efforts to ensure the free development of klapa singing as a living and valuable national tradition. ″This will make a strong incentive for its further development, by implementing and undertaking different popularisation measures. The listing of the property, however, also implies assuming an obligation, both on the international and national level, to further preserve, hand down and promote the high-value cultural property as part of the world heritage. The acknowledged international status which our cultural property was ascribed through the inclusion on the Representative List provides a number of other opportunities for promoting the Republic of Croatia, its culture and creativity as well as an opportunity to promote specific characteristics of Croatian regions, particularly through the field of cultural tourism.″
