Celebrating the Holiday of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sinj
It is difficult to depict or express in words the celebration of Our Lady of Sinj. Tens of thousands of worshippers rush carrying their hearts to her, the blessed among the women. Her tender look understands the prayers and hopes left unsaid, her motherly embrace comforts the saddest souls.
The river of worshippers from all over the world come to Sinj the day before or on the day of the celebration. In front of the image of the Miraculous Madonna everything is forgotten, the fatigue, hunger and thirst. With their worshipping on their knees, the believers polished the marble surrounding the altar.
The preparations for the big holiday start on August 6 with Devetnica. The church and sanctuary were too small for the masses who have come to worship the Madonna.
On August 14 – the Virgilija, or as they say in Sinj – užežin – a mass was held on the crowded Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square by monsignor Vlado Košić, a bishop of Sisak. On Gospin grad, an all-night vigil was held in the votive church. On the Holiday of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, on August 15, the masses in the Church of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj started with a morning prayer at 4 a.m., while the procession of the carrying of her Image were celebratory announced at 9:30 with fanfares. A huge crowd followed their heavenly protector around the streets of Sinj with prayer and song. After the procession the central mass was held on the Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square by the splitsko-makarski monsignor Marin Barišić. The evening holy mass held at 6 p.m. on the Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square was held by the provincial of the Franciscan Province of the Holy Redeemer, reverend Joško Kodžoman.
The šušur in Sinj and its religious celebrations are accompanied by another celebration – Sinj celebrates its day on August 15.
